Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles smashes through the box office estimates and sits pretty at the top.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are on their way to another epic box office win. It just goes to show that slow and steady always wins the race.
Last weekend, Guardians Of The Galaxy was the top grossing movie at the box office but that all changed when the popular Turtles franchise stormed in and took the top spot with an estimated $65 million dollars. That’s quite a debut. Analysts estimated the Turtles opening would rake in somewhere around $45 million but it smashed through those estimates and earned $20 million more.
The opening weekend was so good, in fact, that the distributor, Paramount Pictures, has already announced a sequel which will hit theaters next June, according to USA Today.
“As silly as the idea of pizza-obsessed reptilian warriors may be, the quartet is iconic, claiming a rare level of public awareness,” David Mumpower of Box Office Prophets said.
The movie may not have received rave reviews from many of the nation’s top movie critics, however, that didn’t stop fans from flocking to see it. The overall rating among fans was a “B” but children gave it an “A”, which makes sense seeing as it is mainly geared towards children and teens. Oddly enough, more than half of the audience was males in their mid-twenties, proving that the movie obviously has a nostalgic lure to it.
If you’re surprised by the strong opening weekend, you shouldn’t be. The franchise has been around for a couple of decades now and in 25 years, there hasn’t been one Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie to debut below number 1. Maybe the earnings were less back in the day but this year, the Turtles are on par to be the summer’s biggest blockbuster.
