Could Apple’s Siri be on her way to Mac?

Apple has filed a 92-page patent for what appears to be a desktop version of Siri.

Apple’s Siri has only been around for about three years now, but in that time, the intelligent personal assistant has become famous with mobile users everywhere. Whether you are the kind of iPhone user who actually asks Siri for directions and guidance, or someone who simply likes to exploit the system for a few laughs, Siri has certainly made a positive addition to the iPhone.

Now, Apple seems to be planning to transplant their famed virtual assistant to the big leagues. According to a report from Tech Times, Apple has filed a 92-page patent for what appears to be a desktop version of Siri.

92 pages seems like a lengthy patent for a piece of software that, at least in part, already exists. But based on the Tech Times article, it looks like the exhaustive document covers more than just porting Siri over to OS X from iOS. Indeed, several items covered in the patent include details on how the desktop version of Siri will be able to better tell the difference between user commands and dictation. Just as the mobile Siri has become a tool for voice-to-text technology, it appears that Apple is placing substantial emphasis on the desktop version being used for everything from email composition to word processing.

The desktop version of Siri will also exist as what Apple calls a “third hand,” or as a device that can complete “secondary tasks” while users perform “primary tasks” on their own. Precisely what Apple means by this is difficult to determine from the technical language featured in the patent document. However, it appears that, generally speaking, the desktop version of Siri will have capabilities for streamlining operations that the mobile version does not currently possess.

The big question is when Siri will be making her debut on OS X. Apple will likely announce the latest incarnation of its desktop operating system this fall, but since the new Siri patent is so new, it seems unlikely that the software will be featured as part of the release – at least not right away. It is more likely that Siri will be added to OS X as a standalone update in a few months.
