President Barack Obama was interrupted just before his address to the nation on Iraq: There was a security breach.
A little boy had wiggled away from his parents and squeezed between the bars of the fence separating the sidewalk from the North Lawn of the White House. This caused a temporary lockdown and delayed the president’s speech.
The White House, as the president’s home, takes home security to a new level: The windows are bullet-resistant, alarm-rigged detectors are posted just inside the fences, armed agents are circulating the grounds and snipers are posted on the roof at all times. The little boy was lucky he survived.
The Secret Service said in their statement delivered by Secret Service spokesman Edwin Donovan, “We were going to wait until he learned to talk to question him, but in lieu of that he got a timeout and was sent on way with parents.” Robin Meade of HLN called the statement “a rare moment of humor” for the Secret Service.
Some believe the decision not to hold the boy for questioning was for the best as once he learned to talk he likely would have just said, “I didn’t do it.”
The child-related security breaches continued the next morning, as reported by The Washington Post. Friday a stroller caused the visitor’s center of the U.S. Capitol to close down. Strollers, while usually harmless, could easily be used as a cover-up for a bomb for those with malicious intentions, especially if laden with blankets or bags. Therefore, the unattended stroller was a threat not to be taken lightly by the U.S. Capitol police Friday morning.
In this case, the U.S. Capitol Police spokesman said the stroller was “deemed non-hazardous.”
