TMNT expected to bump Guardians of the Galaxy from top spot

the shell-shocking remake is expected to make a bigger debut than all of the 90's films combined.

A raccoon and four turtles—they’re not in a pet store: they are currently in a battle for the top spot at the box office.

The popular 90s franchise Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles made its debut in theaters on Friday. For anyone who hasn’t seen the comic, cartoon or the last film in 1993– Television News Reporter April O’Neil (Megan Fox) and cameraman Vern Fenwick (Will Arnett) follow the turtles as they attempt to save the New York City from Shredder and his evil Foot Clan.

It was given a B rating from Cinemascore, and has exceeded the reception that many critics believed that it would receive. Excited children and nostalgic parents are expected to help the Michael Bay-produced film to open with $50 million in ticket sales through Sunday in the U.S. and Canada: that’s a higher opening weekend than all previous Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opening combined when they debuted in the early 1990s ($57.8 million).

That could put Guardians of the Galaxy in a very-close second place in the box office. The film stars Chris Pratt, who plays Peter Quill. He and a group of misfits—including a raccoon—fight to save the universe. Even with a drop in sales going into its second week, The Marvel comic film is expected to take in about $45 million during its second weekend in theaters. Galaxy has had one of the best midweek holds of the year and is already on track to become the highest grossing film of the year. It has already made $132 million and is likely to end its weekend with a least $170 million.
