FCC against Verizon’s throttling practices

The FCC has publicly come after Verizon's new data throttling plan, saying that they were also questioning other mobile carriers throttling plans as well.

The Federal Communications Commission has rejected Verizon’s reasoning for throttling some its mobile broadband users, and has announced that they were questioning other mobile carriers’ throttling practices as well.

Verizon announced its new throttling policy on July and plans to put them into effect in October. These plans include throttling the top 5 percent of its LTE users when the network is under heavy loads, with the carrier noting that when the network returned to a normal load users’ speeds would return to normal.

“In short this practice has been widely accepted with little or no controversy,” said Verizon after the FCC took issue with their plan.

Tom Wheeler, the chairman of the FCC, is not accepting any of Verizon’s reasons for the throttling, with the excuse that “everyone is doing it” not being good enough at all.

“My concern in this instance—and it’s not just with Verizon, by the way, we’ve written to all the carriers—is that it is moving from a technology and engineering issue to the business issues … such as choosing between different subscribers based on your economic relationship with them,” Wheeler said in a statement.

The FCC has not publicly released letters to any other carriers, and we don’t yet know if the FCC has any official plans to discuss the matter with other carriers. Despite this, it’s clear that the FCC getting involved with data throttling is far from over.

The FCC has had a number of things to say about mobile carriers of late, especially when it came to Sprint’s recent ditched attempt at buying T-Mobile, with the FCC expressing happiness over the fact that the plan had been stopped.
