DC decides to opt out against a box office battle with Marvel.
Batman, Superman and Captain America were scheduled to face off on May 6, 2016, but the DC superheroes have officially canceled their epic battle. Warner Bros. is moving Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice up to March 25 in order to avoid releasing on the same date as Captain America 3.
A clash between the Marvel and DC Comics films would have likely been epic, as 2013’s Man of Steel grossed more than $668 million and April’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier stands as the highest-grossing release of 2014. Perhaps in an attempt to prove that DC isn’t afraid of their biggest competition, Warner Bros. followed up news of the revised release date with release dates for nine untitled movies based on DC Comics properties through 2020. These unnamed films are slated to release on Aug. 5, 2016; June 23 and Nov. 17, 2017; March 23 and July 27, 2018; April 5 and June 14, 2019; and April 3 and June 19, 2020. With 10 films scheduled to come out between 2016 and 2020, DC seems ready to challenge Marvel, which has 11 new movies planned up until 2019.
Warner Bros. has not announced any details regarding their unnamed planned films, but a Justice League movie is definitely likely; Batman v Superman will also introduce Justice League of America members Wonder Woman and Aquaman. Before even seeing Gal Gadot’s portrayal of Wonder Woman, fans are already calling for a standalone film featuring the legendary Amazon, and the large fanbases for DC characters Shazam and Cyborg suggest that they also will be likely candidates for standalone films.
