The album came in at the top spot for the week ending August 3, selling just over 131,000 copies.

With a career spanning nearly 40 years, Tom Petty has never had a number one album on the Billboard music charts. That run ended this week with the release of Hypnotic Eye, the 13th album he’s recorded with his band The Heartbreakers.

The album came in at the top spot for the week ending August 3, selling just over 131,000 copies and coming in second to Petty’s all-time best showing of 161,000 copies sold for his solo album Wallflowers back in 1994. He almost followed that up with a number one release for 2010’s Mojo, but fell short and took the second spot instead with sales of around 125,000 copies.

The uptick in sales on Hypnotic Eye is due in large part to a concert ticket promotion for Petty’s recent summer tour, in which fans who bought tickets to his shows were given the option of purchasing the album at the same time. Though many fans declined to buy Hypnotic Eye through outlets such as Ticketmaster, copies that were redeemed through the offer were counted under Billboard’s official sales totals. It’s a similar sales offer that Petty had for his album Mojo and a practice that has grown in popularity with acts such as Cher and Bon Jovi, among many others.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers first cracked the Billboard Top 200 with their self-titled debut album in 1977, which featured such mainstays as American Girl and Breakdown. This number one spot on the album chart has been a long time coming for the band, but it’s not the longest a performer has waited to achieve that distinction. Tony Bennett finally had a number one album with his 2011 release Duets II after waiting 54 years for his very first chart-topping release.

Petty isn’t the only aging rocker to make a splash on this week’s chart. Eric Clapton took the number two spot with his tribute album to the late singer/songwriter J.J. Cale, followed by the soundtrack to the film Guardians of the Galaxy entitled Awesome Mix Volume One, which features an eclectic collection of classic pop songs from the 1970’s.
