The 360-degree view is provided by 6 GoPro cameras.

What happens when you take 6 REMUS GoPro video cameras and combine them with an underwater vehicle that can track fearsome ocean predators like the great white? Answer: One amazing video.

Thanks to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, those who never venture into the ocean can now see what happens when a shark attacks. Located off Mexico’s Guadalupe Island, the SharkCam films a great white shark as it closes its large jaws around strange-looking device. Thanks to multiple camera angles, according to ABC News, viewers can see the great white shark attack the underwater vehicle from below and head-on.

“REMUS SharkCam is a specially outfitted REMUS-100 autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) equipped with video cameras and navigational and scientific instrumentation that enable it to locate, track, and film up close a tagged marine animal, such as a North Atlantic white shark (great white),” Woods Hole says in a description of the REMUS SharkCam on its website. “The vehicle is pre-programmed to home in on a signal from a transponder beacon attached to the animal at depths up to 100 meters (330 feet) and in a variety of patterns and configurations.”

The footage is from last year, but it’s being released now because of Shark Week on the Discovery Channel.
