Leaked transcript reveals rapper made some controversial remarks in court.
Kanye West is beloved for the powerful lyrics in his songs, but a leaked transcript from his 2013 deposition released Wednesday by TMZ proves that his words in real life are not nearly as likeable. The rapper is now under fire with fans for equating the lack of privacy his suffers due to paparazzi to the horrible racism in the 1960s.
West was charged with criminal battery and attempted grand theft after he attacked a photographer at LAX Airport last year. He plead not guilty, and was sentenced to two years probation starting in March 2014. The transcripts released today reveal that West antagonized and argued with the paparazzo’s lawyer Nate Goldberg in court.
“I’m in the business of trying to make dope shit for the world. You’re in the business of representing scums and trying to make as much money as long as there’s this lapse in the law,” said West. “I’m the smartest fucking celebrity you’ve ever dealt with. I’m not Britney Spears.”
West then went on to compare his lack of privacy to the bigotry which minorities in America suffered in the 1960s.
“I equate it to discrimination. I equate it to inequalities. We, as group of minorities here in L.A., as celebrities have to ban together to influence guys like this – guys trying to take the picture, guys trying to get the big win, guys trying to get the cheque.”
Clearly unable to see any problems with this sort of statement, Kanye continued to compare the treatment of celebrities to racism in an interview with GQ this month. He states that even his toast after his wedding to Kim Kardashian addressed the topic.
“What I talked about in it was the idea of celebrity, and celebrities being treated like blacks were in the ’60s, having no rights, and the fact that people can slander your name,” he said in the GQ article. “I said that in the toast. And I had to say this in a position where I, from the art world, am marrying Kim. And how we’re going to fight to raise the respect level for celebrities so that my daughter can live a more normal life. She didn’t choose to be a celebrity. But she is. So I’m going to fight to make sure she has a better life.”
