Sony announces female superhero spin-off from ‘Spider-Man’ franchise

The studio cited a 2017 release date but did not confirm which character will be adapted for the big screen.

The news of an upcoming all-female Ghostbusters movie has been followed by an announcement today that Sony Pictures will produce a female-driven superhero film based on one of the characters from the Amazing Spider-Man movie franchise. The studio cited a 2017 release date but did not confirm which character will be adapted for the big screen.

Sony Pictures has been scrambling as of late to re-vamp their franchise based around the ever-popular Marvel comic book character. It’s one of the major titles, along with Fantastic Four and X-Men, that is not owned by Marvel Studios, whose Guardians of the Galaxy film opened to a record-breaking $94 million dollar box office weekend.

That kind of money has inspired rival studios to produce content based on the comic book characters they own and for Sony, Spider-Man is arguably their most important property. But the most recent sequel featuring the webslinger grossed just $700 million worldwide, far below the “billion dollars” Sony chairman Amy Pascal was targeting just weeks before the release of the The Amazing Spider-Man 2 back in May.

With their biggest franchise under-performing, the studio made a decision to push the third installment to 2018 and replaced it instead with The Sinister Six, a spin-off movie focusing on the collection of super-villains who want Spidey dead. They include Doctor Octopus, the Vulture, and Mysterio among others. Now considering the recent box office success of Luc Besson’s Lucy, and films Wanted and Salt (both starring Angelina Jolie) showing that female-driven films can do well in the marketplace, Sony has decided to go in a similar direction with another spin-off to breathe new life into the Spider-Man franchise.

The question as to which character Sony intends to turn into the next big tentpole remains unanswered. There are a few possibilities within the Spider-verse, including Silver Sable, Black Cat, Silk, or perhaps, Spider-Woman. Of those four names, the only one that’s been introduced in a previous film thus far is Felicia Hardy, aka The Black Cat. She was Harry Osborn’s assistant in the last sequel, which is a major change from her character as a reformed thief and amateur detective in the comic books.
