The film's director and producer have agreed to executive produce the new television series.
Kids’ channel Nickelodeon has ordered a 13-episode straight-to-series pickup of School of Rock, confirms the Hollywood Reporter.
Paramount TV, the television division of the production company that produced the 2003 hit movie, will assist in the children’s cable network in producing the show.
The show will follow the same premise as the movie, which chronicled the adventures of Dewey Finn, an out-of-work musician who found a more constant gig as a substitute teacher at prestigious prep school. In the film, actor and comedian Jack Black played the part of Finn.
It is unclear if Black will reprise his role, as casting has yet to be announced. However, the film’s director, Richard Linklater, and the film’s producer, Scott Rudin, have both signed on to executive produce the new live-action series.
“With Dewey’s outrageous personality and rock star sensibilities taking center stage, School of Rock will be an irresistibly fun show for the whole family,” said Amy Powell, Paramount TV’s president.
Executives at Nickelodeon are similarly excited.
“School of Rock is one of those great movies that always felt quintessentially Nickelodeon in its tone and humor,” added Russell Hicks, president of content and development at Nick.. “We jumped at the opportunity to partner with Paramount Television and bring it to life as a TV series.”
School of Rock, the film, has grossed more than $131 million worldwide since October 2013.
School of Rock, the series, is set to debut on Nickelodeon in spring of 2015.
