That figure is in large part due to her role in the film 'Gravity.'
This has been a banner year for Sandra Bullock. Fresh from winning the “Decade of Hotness” Award at Spike TV’s Guys Choice Awards in June, the actress has just topped Forbes’ list of top-earning actresses for 2014 with $51 million.
That figure is in large part due to her role in the film Gravity. Released in December of last year, the sci-fi thriller took in $716 million at the box office and earned 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. The movie took home seven, though Bullock was not among the nominees for Best Actress. Cate Blanchett won that for her role in Blue Jasmine.
“Movies based on original ideas, as opposed to comic books or young adult novels, are rare these days in Hollywood. Movies based on original ideas that cost $100 million to produce and feature one actress for the majority of the screen time are even rarer but director Alfonso Cuaron and Warner Bros. had a huge hit with “Gravity,” explained Forbes. “Much of that success can be chalked up to Sandra Bullock’s gripping performance as Ryan Stone. Not only did the film win seven Oscars but it also helped Bullock become this year’s highest-paid actress.”
Bullock, 50, also starred in last summer’s female buddy comedy, The Heat, co-starring Melissa McCarthy and raking in almost $230 million worldwide.
Coming in behind Bullock was Jennifer Lawrence who made $34 million from her role as Katniss Everdeen in the hugely successful Hunger Games franchise and Jennifer Aniston with $31 million taking roles in small-budget comedies as well as endorsement deals and syndication earnings from the TV show Friends.
Forbes ranked their list based on estimated earnings of each actress over a 12 month period from June 2013 to June 2014 and their determinations did not take into consideration such factors as representative commissions, account taxes, or various other costs incurred by A-list talent.
