Cruz later clarified her comments in a statement.
Actor Jon Voight, also known as Angelina Jolie’s father, slammed fellow film stars Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz for signing a letter circulated by a number of Spanish artists asking the European Union to “condemn the bombing by land, sea and air against the Palestinian civilian population in the Gaza Strip.”
“I am heartsick that people like Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem could incite anti-Semitism all over the world and are oblivious to the damage they have caused,” Voight wrote in a column for The Hollywood Reporter. “They are obviously ignorant of the whole story of Israel’s birth.”
“I am asking all my peers who signed that poison letter against Israel to examine their motives,” Voight added. “Can you take back the fire of anti-Semitism that is raging all over the world now?”
In response to Voight’s letter, Cruz clarified her comments in a statement obtained by E! Online. “I don’t want to be misunderstood on this important subject,” Cruz said. “I’m not an expert on the situation and I’m aware of the complexity of it.”
“My only wish and intention in signing that group letter is the hope that there will be peace in both Israel and Gaza,” she added.
