Amazing: Two-pound Michigan baby survives heart surgery

The baby behaves like a normal newborn, kicking her legs and pulling on tubes.

Alexandra Mae Van Kirk, nicknamed Sasha or “Mighty Girl,” is less than one month old. Still, Fox 17 West Michigan reports that she has already undergone two major surgeries. Beginning when her mother was 22 weeks pregnant, Sasha was clearly not growing the way she was supposed to or as much as doctors hoped she would. Her chances of being born alive were slim.

Still, on July 7, her parents welcomed her into the world, weighing two pounds and three ounces. Against odds, she even expressed herself vocally, crying like a healthy newborn would. Sasha still had a number of hurdles ahead of her, though she had already defied odds at the first major obstacle. At the age of one-and-a-half weeks, Sasha had her first surgery to address an intestinal problem.

Less than a week later, she needed a heart procedure. Sasha’s pulmonary valve was stuck and was unable to open and close properly. A team of doctors, including a pediatric cardiologist, discussed the possibility of using a pulmonary balloon vulvoplasty. This procedure is routine on a full term baby, but had never been performed on someone the size of Sasha.

The surgeon who performed the procedure was confident that it could be done, though he had not done it before. Yet, after a 45-minute procedure on Sasha’s grape-sized heart, the surgery was a success. CBS News reports that Sasha is doing well and though her diagnosis of critical pulmonary stenosis was alarming, the surgery has cured her of it. She behaves like a normal newborn, kicking her legs and pulling on tubes. While her medical future is unclear, it is apparent that Sasha is ready for the challenge.
