The Cheesecake Factory takes the cake for most caloric food of 2014

Just how bad are the nation's most unhealthy foods? Xtreme Eating Awards 2014 has all the facts.

The results of the Xtreme Eating Awards 2014 competition are out! The Cheesecake Factory took the not-so-coveted top spot once again this year. The annual competition, hosted by the not-for-profit Center for Science in the Public Interest, takes a vested interest in showcasing just how unhealthy some chain foods are.

The organization was founded in the early 1970s, and launched the Xtreme Eating Awards in 2007. The group prides itself on being “the voice of the American public on nutrition, food safety, health and other issues”. Judging of the contest is based on how unhealthy the foods are based on statistics including calorie, saturated fat, and added sugar counts.

The Cheesecake Factory is responsible three of the nine most calorie-heavy dishes in the country this year. The most caloric food was the Cheesecake Factory’s Bruléed French Toast, with 2,780 calories, 93 grams of saturated fat and 24 teaspoons of added sugar. Saturated fat and sugar are linked to the increase risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes.

According to the American Heart Association, the meal surpassed the recommended daily limit of added sugars by 15 teaspoons. For added perspective, that number of calories would take seven hours of swimming laps to burn off.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest identified a significant trend of increased number of calories included in the nation’s most unhealthy dishes since the initiation of the Xtreme Eating Awards in 2007. “When we were screening candidates for the first Xtreme Eating awards in 2007, we were shocked to see 1,500-calorie entrées,” said the group in a statement. “This year, nearly all of our ‘winners’ hit (or just missed) the 2,000-calorie mark. And a few doozies topped 3,000 calories. You could take half home and still overeat.”

According to Canada’s Food Guide, the average male adult should ideally consume between 2500 and 3000 (based on level of activity in lifestyle) calories a day in total from all food sources. The average female adult should consume between 1900 and 2400 calories.

The findings of the Xtreme Eating Awards are unsettling for the nation, especially at a time when one-third of the American population is considered obese. The disease is not only a public health problem but also an economic problem. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the cost of obesity in 2008 was $148 billion, a number that only increases when accounting for the fact that obesity is linked to CVD and type 2 diabetes.

Other food chains to make it onto the list include Red Robin Gourmet Burgers, BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse, Famous Dave’s, Joe’s Crab Shack, Maggiano’s Little Italy and Chevys Fresh Mex.
