American Idol alum Michael Johns has passed away

The singer's death is being linked to a blood clot in his ankle.

American Idol contestant Michael Johns, who appeared in season seven, passed away on Friday. He was 35.

It’s being said that an ankle injury is linked to the cause of death. Friends close to Johns tell TMZ that he went to a doctor on Thursday to check out the pain after twisting his ankle. The injury triggered a blood clot, sending the swelling and bruising up to his leg. The doctors sent him home. The next day, friends found him on the couch unresponsive.

The Australian-born singer finished eighth when he competed on Fox’s singing competition show back in 2008. Johns’ appearance on the show caused some controversy. He had already been signed to a major record label (Maverick) before he auditioning. He was also 29 at the time, which is the limit for eligibility to audition.

He went on to have a busy career as a singer. He released his album Hold Back My Heart in 2009 and EP Love and Sex in 2012. Early last month, Johns tweeted about working on new music, saying, “Headed to the studio to work on new song called ‘Reckless’ been waiting a long time for this one.”

Idol fans, former contestants, and judges have tweeted their condolences. Former judge Simon Cowell tweeted, “A truly great guy. Rest in peace Michael.” Randy Jackson tweeted, “So Sad. Too soon. Thank you for sharing your talents with us.”

The singer’s family released a statement saying, “Our family is devastated by the passing of our beloved Michael, a wonderful husband, son, brother, uncle, and friend.” They also thanked everyone for their love and support.

Johns is the first Idol top 10 finalist to pass away in the show’s 13-season history.
