Severely burned teen set himself on fire in online fire challenge dare

The boy suffered first- and second-degree burns on his face, neck and hips.

A teenage boy was severely injured Friday after setting himself ablaze in an effort to conquer the so-called “fire challenge,” The Orange County Register reports.

Orange County Fire Authority Captain Larry Kurtz told the newspaper that the 16-year-old covered his chest in nail polish remover and lit himself on fire.

Needless to say, the boy suffered serious burns: First- and second-degree burns on his face, neck and hips, according to authorities.

According to The New York Daily News, the purpose of the fire challenge is to place some type of flammable liquid on your body, light it on fire and then quickly try to extinguish the flames with water.

Unsurprisingly, putting out the fire is sometimes more difficult than it looks. WKYT reported on Friday about a 15-year-old boy in Lexington, Kentucky, who was treated by firefighters and taken to the hospital after attempting the fire challenge.

There are numerous videos (such as the one below) of young people attempting the fire challenge.

Note: The individual in the video is not the Southern California teen who seriously injured himself, but another individual demonstrating the fire challenge for his viewing audience.
