On Friday afternoon, residents of Jackson, N.J, enjoyed the thrills that come with rides, games, food, and fun at amusement parks. It was a breezy, sunny day with everything operated as it usually is at the Six Flags Great Adventure and Safari when something every thrill-seeking roller coaster rider doesn’t get to do every day (or really want to, for that matter): walk down the ascent of a roller coaster. As soon as riders reached the top of the 233-foot high hill of the Nitro roller coaster, a power outage forced everyone on the ride to walk off.
While no one was injured when the power outage occurred, it did deter riders from enjoying the Nitro which makes riders feel as if they are flying through space at super speed. When riders reach the top of the coaster, they actually get a view of Philadelphia which is over 60 miles away before descending the first hill. The Nitro is the 9th fastest roller coaster in the United States, comparable to coasters such as Desparado at Buffalo Bill’s Resort and Casino in Primm, Nevada and the Diamondback at King’s Island in Mason, Ohio. The Six Flags roller coaster reaches speeds up to a literally breathtaking 80 m.p.h.
Park officials have been addressing the issue and it is yet to be announced when the ride will reopen. Countless video footage of the event has been documented by riders who walked the roller coaster and spectators on the ground. There are also several videos that document the thrilling ride from start to finish of the Nitro. Riders of the coaster and park officials express they are grateful the power outage occurred at the moment it did rather than midway through the ride when the possibility of injury to the riders would be exponentially greater.
