Philadelphia community mourns for three-year-old girl killed by stray bullet

A Philadelphia community mourns the death of a three-year-old girl struck by a stray bullet while she was sitting on the front porch of a home on Friday night.

The shooting death of a 3-year-old girl sitting on the front porch of a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania home Friday night was decried as senseless violence, with one family friend saying, “No baby deserves to die like that,” reports the Billings Gazette.

A stray bullet struck the child on the left side of her chest while her hair was being braided at about 9:40 p.m. Friday, in the Grays Ferry section of Philadelphia, according to police. Officers put the girl in their patrol car and rushed her to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where she was pronounced dead less than an hour later. On Saturday, police identified the girl as Tynirah Borum.

“She was everything to us,” said Renee Bradford, a friend of Tynirah’s mother, to WCAU-TV. “She didn’t deserve this. She was simply trying to get her hair done. For her to get shot in the chest? She’s a baby. No baby deserves to die like that,” said Bradford.

No arrests have been made. Police are speaking with a person of interest, they said Saturday.

An argument between a man on a bicycle and a 24-year-old man resulted in gunfire, according to police. The cyclist fired three shots from a handgun, shooting the other man in the head, said police. The shooter fled on the bike, according to witnesses.

Three adults were injured in the gunfire.

The 24-year-old victim was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in critical condition. Stray bullets struck a 28-year-old female bystander in the left arm, and a 21-year-old male bystander in the right leg. They were also taken to the hospital.

“There’s nothing much you can say about this tragedy,” said Mike Collins, the victim’s cousin, to the news station. “That was my little cousin. It hurts.”
