In an interview with IGN Entertainment, former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson said that Jamie Foxx has been tapped to play him in an upcoming biopic.
Foxx, who won an Oscar in 2004 for his portrayal of Ray Charles, has played sports figures twice before. In 2001, he costarred in Ali, as a corner man, and in 1999 Foxx played a quarterback in Oliver Stone’s, Any Given Sunday.
Variety magazine reports that the movie is under development by Foxx’s manager, Rick Yorn, who is also producing the film. Terence Winter is set to write the script. Winter is the creator of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire and wrote the screenplay for Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street, along with being a writer and producer for The Sopranos. No other details have been finalized, and the project has yet to settle on a studio or a name for the film.
While the details of the deal are limited, Tyson’s life offers plenty of fodder for a future script. Besides his tumultuous career as a former undisputed heavy-weight champion, Tyson’s life has been full of ups and downs, as well. He spent six years in jail on rape charges, bit both of Evander Holyfield’s ears, survived his daughter’s death and had his face tattooed. Tyson has been through bankruptcy and has been convicted on cocaine charges. There’s also the time he told USA Today that he wanted to be a missionary.
Other projects about Tyson’s life have already been released. An autobiography titled Undisputed Truth was published last year, and he appeared in August 2012 on Broadway in a show directed by Spike Lee. Tyson has appeared in movies in television, most notably playing himself in 2009’s The Hangover.
