The disaster move makes a big splash after scoring free publicity and trending on social media.
Syfy channel has enjoyed its highest-rated original movie yet with Sharknado 2: The Second One, according to CNN Money.
Roughly 3.9 million viewers tuned into the cable channel on Wednesday to watch the sequel to 2013’s Sharknado, which was seen by 1.4 million viewers last July.
The film stars Ian Zeiring and Tara Reid, who reprised their roles from the first movie, as well as Vivica A. Fox, Kelly Osbourne and Judah Friedlander. Sharknado 2 follows the ensemble cast as they battle a freak storm of sharks.
In addition to record ratings, the disaster movie also made a splash on Twitter. At one point, the film filled all ten of the spots for trending hash tags for the United States, reports the Associated Press. More than 581,000 Sharknado 2-related tweets were posted during the film’s airing.
Several news reports that came in advance of the airing helped to bolster the movie’s debut ratings. Several online, print and television media outlets reported on the sequel. In particular, the film enjoyed a segment on NBC’s Today. NBC and Syfy share the same owner.
The film’s star, Tara Reid, created quite a media stir after insisting that a real sharknado is a real possibility in an interview with GQ Magazine.
“You know, it actually can happen,” said Reid, 38, to the men’s magazine. “I mean, the chances of it happening are very rare, but it can happen actually.”
To capitalize on the film’s success, Syfy will re-air Sharknado 2 throughout the weekend. In addition, Syfy channel’s president, Dave Howe, has already orderED a third installment of the Sharknado franchise.
