Characters in the sequel to 2004's 'The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie' will be 3D and CGI.

While 2015 will bring about Marvel’s Ant-Man and Avengers: Age of Ultron, the most highly-anticipated superhero movie of the year may end up becoming the new SpongeBob SquarePants movie which Nickelodeon announced Thursday. The network unveiled the first official trailer for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, and it reveals that the film will bring the residents of Bikini Bottom into the real world as 3D CG animated characters with superpowers.

The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie was released in theaters ten years ago and was a box-office success, grossing over $140 million with mostly-positive reviews. The sequel brings back the whole cast, including Tom Kenny as SpongeBob (and Gary the Snail), Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick, Rodger Bumpass as Squidward, and Clancy Brown as Mr. Krabs. According to Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Movies’ trailer for the film, Antonio Banderas joins the cast as Alameda Jack, a villainous pirate captain intent on recovering the last page to a magical book which gives anybody writing on its pages the power to do whatever they want. SpongeBob and friends must journey to the beaches of the real world to save Bikini Bottom and thwart Alameda Jack’s plans, and along the way they acquire superpowers which may rival those of Captain America and the Incredible Hulk.

Sponge Out of Water is directed by Paul Tibbit, who also writes for and produces the SpongeBob SquarePants animated series. It was written by Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger, who wrote together for Kung Fu Panda 2. The film is slated to hit theaters Feb. 6, 2015.
