'Old Fashioned' will provide an alternative for viewers who don't want to see erotic bondage film.
While the highly-anticipated big-screen adaptation of E.L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey will likely take over the box office when it hits theaters next Valentine’s Day, a clean, religious love film may provide it with some legitimate competition. The Christian finance firm that brought viewers God’s Not Dead and Heaven is for Real will be releasing a wholesome romance entitled Old Fashioned on the same weekend, and their film is already being branded as “the anti-Fifty Shades of Grey.”
“I wanted to tell a love story that takes the idea of Godly romance seriously,” said Rik Swartzwelder, who wrote and directed the film, in the statement announcing the premiere date. “A story that, without apology, explores the possibility of a higher standard in relationships; yet, is also fully aware of just how fragile we all are and doesn’t seek to heap guilt upon those of us that have made mistakes.”
Swartzwelder also stars alongside Elizabeth Ann Roberts in the film, which bears the tagline “Chivalry is making a comeback.” They play a former frat boy and a free-spirited woman who find love the old-fashioned way. While competing against Fifty Shades may seem like a foolish move, Swartzwelder is using the stark differences between the two movies to create move buzz for his film.
“One is a modestly budgeted indie flick that seeks to make room for godly romance in contemporary America,” he wrote on his blog. “The other is a multi-million dollar studio film based on a best-selling erotic novel that has… other goals in mind.”
