The Cheesecake Factory's Bruleed French Toast contains 2,780 calories along with 93 grams of saturated fat.
The Cheesecake Factory wins three out of nine Xtreme Eating Awards for 2014. The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a nonprofit organization, notes that the popular chain could easily have swept the complete list.
The Cheesecake Factory’s Bruleed French Toast contains 2,780 calories along with 93 grams of saturated fat, or about five days’ worth, and 2,230 milligrams of sodium, or more than one day’s worth. Additionally, the dish contains 24 teaspoons of sugar, most of which is added. The American Heart Association suggests a daily sugar limit of nine teaspoons of added sugar for men and six teaspoons for women.
Referring to previous dishes from the chain being announced as winners in years past, the chain’s founder and CEO, David M. Overton, said in a statement, “I was sick of winning that prize.” However, the chain continues to serve dishes such as the Farfalle with Chicken and Roasted Garlic, which offers 2,410 calories, 63 grams of saturated fat, and 1,370 mg of sodium.
Paige Einstein, CSPI dietitian, noted, “Mr. Overton may be tiring of the prize, but he’s certainly making sure that The Cheesecake Factory remains the most calorically extreme chain that we’ve seen.”
According to Einstein, “When French toast is ‘Bruléed,’ fries are ‘bottomless,’ and steaks are now garnished with not just one, but two Italian sausages, it’s clear that caloric extremism still rules the roost at many of America’s chain restaurants.” She continued, “Two out of three American adults are overweight or obese and one in 10 adults has diabetes, thanks in part to The Cheesecake Factory, Chevys Fresh Mex, Maggiano’s Little Italy, and much of the rest of America’s chain restaurant industry.”
