The unlikely duo made an appearance on NBC's 'Today' show Tuesday morning.
There have been some strange duets in the past – Eminem and Elton John, LL Cool J and Brad Paisley, Bing Crosby and David Bowie – but this one might just beat them all: Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga.
The unlikely duo made an appearance on NBC’s Today show Tuesday morning to promote the release of Cheek to Cheek, their album of jazz standards chosen from The Great American Songbook.
This isn’t the first time the two have paired together, Gaga and Bennett collaborated on the song The Lady is a Tramp for Bennett’s Duets II album back in 2011. They enjoyed the experience so much, they decided to record an entire album together.
“I love the way she sings,” said Bennett of his recording partner. “The reason I chose to do (this project) with her is to show how wonderful she really sings. She’s so uninhibited and talented, and has a wonderful talent of knowing how to improvise very well. She’s really a great American singer.”
For Gaga, the feeling is mutual. “There might be 60 years between me and Tony, but there’s no distance between us when we sing jazz,” said Gaga, who considers Bennett quite the gentleman. “He calls me ‘Lady,’ and when I walk in the room, he stands up and so do all his friends.
The album, due on September 23, features many well-known jazz standards with both singers performing solos and duets on time-honored selections such as Sophisticated Lady, It Don’t Mean a Thing (If it Ain’t Got That Swing), Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered, and the Cole Porter classic Anything Goes, the first single from their album which is currently available on iTunes.
“It’s really of another time, and I hope with this music we can bring back that sentiment of love, kindness and joy that I’m getting to experience working with him every day”, said Gaga about their latest collaboration. “I just want to spread that around the world.”
The album will be followed by a PBS Great Performances concert special, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga: Cheek to Cheek LIVE!, which is set to air on October 24.
