Scarlett Johansson’s ‘Lucy’ takes the top spot at the box office

The Luc Besson-directed flick blew away its box-office competition.

Lucy, the new French action flick starring Scarlett Johansson, grossed $17.1 million in its box office debut on Friday, according to Entertainment Weekly.

With $17 million in ticket sales, Lucy took first place at the box office. The film, which follows Lucy as she begins to realize the full potential of her mental and physical ability after being poisoned by a drug, beat Dwayne Johnson’s Hercules — which also debuted.

Hercules earned $11 million at the box office. While the recent string of negative reviews could have hurt Hercules on its opening day, the movie is producing strong results in 19 international markets and still may prove more profitable than originally projected.

Meanwhile, Lucy is on course to earn $35 million in its opening weekend — and it has yet to be introduced to international markets. The film hits international markets next week.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, starring Gary Oldman and Keri Russell, nabbed the number three spot for Friday. Originally opening July 11, the film has grossed $160.4 million domestically thus far.

The action-thriller The Purge: Anarchy earned $3.4 million on Friday, placing fourth. The film has sold $44.8 million worth of tickets since opening July 18.

Planes: Fire and Rescue, a computer-animated comedy-adventure flick, rounded out the fifth spot. Earning $28.8 million domestically since July 18, the film earned $2.8 million on Friday.

Lucy‘s strong debut is said to not only awaken a sleeper of a July box office, but to cement Scarlett Johansson’s star power.
