Justin Bieber surprises Make-A-Wish recipient with prestigious honor

Popstar gives fan his Champ of Charity award.

Legal troubles throughout this year have damaged Justin Bieber’s reputation, but the popstar made major strides towards repairing that damage at the Young Hollywood Awards in Los Angeles on Jul. 27. After being honored with the Champ of Charity Award, he gave the award away to Grace Kesablak, a 10-year-old fan who is battling cancer.

Despite his recently-acquired “bad boy” reputation, the “Boyfriend” singer has granted a record-breaking 200+ wishes through the Make-A-Wish foundation. After a video montage highlighted Bieber’s work with the Make-A-Wish foundation, fellow popstar Cody Simpson presented him with the prestigious award.

“Someone asked me backstage and they said, ‘What’s it like to give?’ And I didn’t really know what to say, but now I know it’s so much better than receiving,” said the 20-year-old in his acceptance speech. “This is Grace’s award. Grace, can you come up here please?”

Kesablak, a Make-A-Wish recipient, then walked up to the stage in a pink gown and matching cap. Bieber handed her the award and picked her up, causing the audience to loudly cheer for them both. Bieber left the ceremony soon after that, but Kesablak remained in the Wiltern Theatre with her guests and held tightly to the award all evening.

This act of selfless kindness took place right after Bieber publicly joined the #CardsForDanny movement that began after 6-year-old Massachusetts boy Danny Nickerson asked for birthday cards from strangers from all over the world. Nickerson is suffering from an incurable brain tumor, and celebrated his birthday on Jul. 25. Bieber posted a photo of Nickerson on his official Instagram profile with “HAPPY BIRTHDAY DANNY! MUCH LOVE, JUSTIN BIEBER” written across it. He captioned the picture with “#happybirthdaydanny stay strong.”
