While the first movie hasn't even hit theaters yet, Marvel announces when the sequel will hit theaers.
Marvel’s biggest surprise at the San Diego Comic-Con came from overseas.
James Gunn and Chris Pratt sent in a video from London to announce the release date for a now-confirmed sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Teaser footage from the sequel included Hulk fighting a robot and a close-up of Captain America’s shield split down the middle.
The announcement was made during a discussion about another of Marvel’s franchises, The Avengers. Gunn was recently rumored to return as writer and director, and he confirmed the news on Twitter.
According to BBC, Josh Brolin is confirmed to play super villain Thanos and will feature in both Avengers: Age of Ultron and Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
Galaxy is based around Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), who joins up with a group of misfits, including a raccoon, to save the universe. The movie doesn’t hit theaters until Augut 1, but there is already a lot of positive buzz about the movie and talks of a sequel. It’s unclear whether Nicole Perlman, who co-wrote the first Guardians with Gunn, will return.
It was also announced that today’s sequel news was accompanied by the announcement that there is a Guardians of the Galaxy animated series in the works. No word on when it will debut, but it will appear on Disney XD.
Guardians is Marvel Studios’ 10th film since starting to self-finance its own projects in 2008.
The Disney-owned studio already has dated a slate of new, untitled films through 2019.The sequel to the sci-fi epic will debut on July 28, 2017.
