Pennsylvania gunman may have been upset at hospital’s ‘gun-free zone’ policy

The man reportedly had 39 additional bullets in his pocket.

Richard Plotts, 49, allegedly shot and killed his social workers and injured his psychiatrist at the Sister Marie Lenahan Wellness Center in Darby, Pennsylvania, on Thursday, Reuters reports

Police are still searching for a motive in the deadly shooting, but they believe that Plotts may have been upset about the hospital’s “gun-free zone” policy.

“There’s evidence that he took offense to the issue that there were signs posted at Mercy Fitzgerald Health System indicating that it was a gun-free zone,” Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whelan said, according to the Philadelphia Daily News

Plotts reportedly had 39 additional bullets in his pocket when he was subdued by his doctor and several staffers at the hospital.

Citing officials, The Inquirer reported on Friday that Plotts may have killed many others had Dr. Lee Silverman not pulled his own weapon and shot the gunman three times.

By violating the hospital’s gun policy, Dr. Silverman saved his life and the lives of countless others. Should psychiatrists be encouraged to carry guns? Sound off in the comments section.
