McCain said he will contact the Arizona governor about the incident.
Republican Arizona Senator John McCain, a former POW during the Vietnam War, isn’t happy the Grand Canyon State’s execution of Joseph Wood on Wednesday.
“I believe in the death penalty for certain crimes. But that is not an acceptable way of carrying it out. And people who were responsible should be held responsible,” McCain told Politico in an interview on Thursday. “The lethal injection needs to be an indeed lethal injection and not the bollocks-upped situation that just prevailed. That’s torture.”
Woods was put to death on Wednesday, but according to a report from The Associated Press, it took the death row inmate almost two hours to die after he was injected with a mixture of the sedative midazolam and the painkiller hydromorphone. During the two hours it took Woods to go from injection to death, he gasped for air every few seconds.
Despite disagreeing with the process, McCain said he would not contact Republican Arizona Governor Jan Brewer about the incident.
“It’s a state issue,” the senator told Politico. “The decision is made by the state Legislature and the governor.”
