New York City police are investigating another chokehold incident, The Associated Press reports.
According to The AP, the incident took place on July 14 at a subway station in East Harlem. Police say that 22-year-old Ronald Johns was taken into custody for walking through a subway gate without paying.
According to New York Magazine, the chokehold move was outlawed 20 years ago, but NYPD Commissioner William Bratton said Tuesday that the first incident, in which Eric Garner died in police custody after a police officer used a chokehold on him, demands a “top-to-bottom” retraining of the city’s police department.
“As I have reviewed that incident and reviewed the training of the department, it is my belief that we are going to have to do more than just a review of Staten Island,” Bratton said at a news conference, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Friends, family and community leaders gathered this week to pay tribute to Garner, NBC New York reports. Those paying tribute to Garner included the Revered Al Sharpton.
Garner will be laid to rest on Thursday.
