The teen wanted to fly around the world in a single engine plane in 30 days.
17-year-old Haris Suleman was killed Tuesday when his plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean near American Samoa, The Associated Press Reports. The young man, who was flying with his father, was trying to set a record for an around-the-world flight.
Haris’ goal was to fly around the world in a single engine plane in just 30 days.
According to The Washington Post, Haris and his father, Babar, had prepared for the worst.
Citing his online diary, The Post reports that Babar wrote well before the journey started, that he and his son knew they might have to ditch. Babar also listed gear such as a life raft, life jackets and shark repellent as evidence they knew they might have to spend several days stranded in the ocean.
“With a trip like this, there’s always a risk, and they did prepare for that risk. You can plan all you want, but sometimes things just don’t happen the way you planned,” Haris’ sister, Hiba, told reporters Wednesday, according to The AP.
The AP notes that Haris’ body has been recovered, but rescuers are still searching for his father’s body.
