After an underwhelming box office performance by 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2', Sony changes the franchise's upcoming release dates.
After the disappointing box office performance of Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony has pushed back the release date of the series’ third installment and moved its spin-off film forward. The studio announced Wednesday that Sinister Six, which features the team of super villains formed in the pages of the “The Amazing Spider-Man” comics in 1964, will release on Nov. 11, 2016.
Despite initially announcing that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 would release in 2016, this year’s Spidey film earning less than it’s 2012 predecessor and all three of Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man movies forced Sony to find new ways to attract fans of the infamous wall-crawler. After seeing the success of super-team films like Avengers and X-Men and noting the excitement surrounding the upcoming Justice League film, Sony clearly hopes that the spin-off will return viewers to the franchise with their own super-powered team.
“With Sinister Six in the hands of writer-director Drew Goddard, we feel extremely confident placing the film on a prime date in 2016,” stated Doug Belgrad, President of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group.
Sony has given the Jun. 10, 2016 release date originally intended for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 to the Seth Gordon-helmed action-adventure Uncharted, which is based on the best-selling Playstation video game franchise. ASM 3 has in turn been pushed back two years, to 2018. This change may present that film with some tough competition, as two untitled Marvel movies and a mystery Fox superhero film are also slated for that year. The Amazing Spider-Man 4 was originally scheduled for release on May 4, 2018, but will presumably now be pushed back to a later date.
Jamie Foxx’s Electro, Dane DeHaan’s Green Goblin, and Paul Giamatti’s Rhino, all of which were introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, are likely to be featured in Sinister Six. Kraven the Hunter, Doctor Octopus, and the Vulture have been teased as the final members of the villainous group.
