Amazon’s new Fire phone: Game-changer or DOA?

Amazon's first Fire doesn’t spark, but delivers a basic, yet well-rounded phone.

What chance does Amazon’s Fire phone have against tech giants Apple and Samsung in the fierce smartphone market? With their new device being released on Friday, reviews have been mixed. The conclusions seem to be that while it is a good phone, it is nothing to write home about. Amazon’s device is a “solid,” yet forgettable entry for the first-time phone maker.

Reviewer Farhad Manjoo of the New York Times stated that while Amazon’s new entry into the already crowded field is not a game-changer, “The Fire Phone is uncommonly friendly and easy to use. As a bare-bones smartphone, it should prove especially attractive to people who find themselves overwhelmed by today’s crop of do-it-all superphones. When you forget about its whiz-bang marketing, the Fire begins to stand out as something much more interesting: a phone for the rest of us.”

Amazon’s entry keeps pace with many of the currently available smartphones from flagship competitors Apple or Samsung. While many other reviews found it to be a bit bland, Amazon’s new phone does carry some nice features. These include a the 4.7-inch screen with HD 1280×700 resolution and Dynamic Perspective sensors which creates the sensation of 3-D imaging. The Android-based Fire OS 3.5 is supported by a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, an Adreno 330 GPU, and 32GB of storage. A 13MP camera, 2.1MP front-facing camera and a 2,400 mAh battery round out the notable hardware features, making it clear that Amazon paid attention to the details.

The app package includes Firefly, Amazon’s new item and image recognition software, and Mayday, a built-in service that can instantly connect users to tech support. A year-long subscription to Amazon Prime also comes bundled with the purchase of Fire. This allows for discounted shipping from the supplier and access to their vast library of available items.

The 32GB Fire sells for $199 with a two-year contract or for $650 with 24 monthly payments of $27.09. The 64GB version is also available for an additional $100. It is currently available only on the AT&T network.
