Oscar-winners felt an immediate spark after meeting and working together for the first time.
Praised by critics for matching Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan in the classic romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally, director Rob Reiner may have found another celebrity duo who have chemistry that will be remembered for decades. Reiner believes that the spark between Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton in his latest film And So It Goes was already apparent in their very first scene together.
“They meshed perfectly,” said Reiner. “The chemistry was there right off the bat.”
Despite both having long, Oscar-winning careers, Keaton and Douglas neither worked together or knew each other until they started filming And So It Goes. In the film, Douglas portrays an insufferable, egotistical real estate agent who becomes tame under the guidance of a widowed wannabe cabaret singer played by Keaton.
Their chemistry together was apparent in their joint interview with USA Today, where Douglas grilled his co-star with hard-hitting questions in a manner reminiscent of Barbara Walters on The View. After Keaton stated that she is thrilled she is to be back in Manhattan for a day after living in the city for 20 years at the start of her career, Douglas immediately asked a series of follow-up questions about her personal life.
“Who were you living with? Come on. Was it Al? Was Al here?”
Douglas’ probing forced a flustered Keaton to admit that she and Al Pacino did , in fact, spend time in the city together. “Al was here. Thank you. Thank you for that.”
Keaton then went on to say that one of her favorite moments during filming was her “awkward kiss” with Douglas. “It was fun.”
“Don’t act so surprised. God almighty. ‘I can’t believe I actually enjoyed it,'” mocked Douglas, before giving her a compliment of his own.
“I feel like I’ve known her forever. She’s a treat and a half.”
And So It Goes releases in theaters on Friday.
