Jurors convict friend of Boston Marathon bomber

Azamat's trial was the first trial related to the Boston Marathon bombings.

A friend of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was convicted Monday of obstruction of justice and conspiracy, The Associated Press reports.

Azamat Tazhayakov and another friend concealed a backpack containing fireworks that belonged to Tsarnaev.

Despite the fact that Tsarnaev’s other friend, Dias Kadyrbayev, actually threw the backpack away (a fact that both the defense and prosecutors agreed on), the jury still convicted Tazhayakov on obstruction of justice and conspiracy charges.

According to WHDH, three of Tsarnaev’s friends still have to stand trial. These three friends are Khairullozhon Matanov, accused of lying to investigators about contact he had with the suspects, the previously mentioned Dias Kadyrbayev, who is alleged to have thrown away the backpack, and Robel Philippos, another individual accused of lying to authorities.

Azamat’s trial was the first trial related to the Boston Marathon bombings.

Did the jury make the right decision despite the prosecutor’s acknowledgement that Azamat wasn’t the one who actually got rid of the backpack? Share your thoughts in the comments section.
