Report: Dog attacks, kills baby in Ohio

In 2012, 38 people were killed by dogs in the U.S.

A pit bull attacked and killed a seven-month-old child in Dayton, Ohio, on Sunday, the Dayton Daily News reports. The attack occurred inside a home.

A neighbor called police after the baby’s grandmother ran over asking for help.

“She just knocked on my door, bangin’ on my door, She had a baby in her hand. The baby’s not breathing. You need to get here now,” the neighbor told a 911 dispatcher, according to the Dayton Daily News.

County records reveal that an American Staffordshire Terrier is registered at the location where the baby was killed, The Associated Press reports. A police report from June reveals that the same American Staffordshire Terrier attacked another dog before escaping, The AP adds.

The American Kennel Club says that that the American Staffordshire Terrier has a stocky body and strong, powerful head. His athletic build and intelligence make him ideally suited for many dog sports such as obedience, agility, tracking and conformation.

Dogsbite.org notes that 38 fatal dog attacks took place in the U.S. in 2012.
