FDA issues warning about powdered pure caffeine

The FDA is advising against the purchase and consumption of these products.

The FDA has issued a warning to consumers about the potential dangers of powdered pure caffeine. The organization is particularly concerned about the sale of these products over the internet, after reports of health hazards have been brought to light.

So far, the FDA is aware of at least one fatality of a teenager who reportedly used these products.

Ohio Keystone High School wrestler Logan Stiner died earlier this year after overdosing on pure powdered caffeine that he purchased over the internet.

Pure caffeine is a powerful stimulant that is basically 100 percent caffeine – one teaspoon of pure caffeine is approximately equal to 25 cups of coffee. Parents need to be wary of the fact that these products are attractive to young people given their stimulating properties, as well as direct marketing efforts to consumers within this age bracket.

Symptoms of caffeine overdose include seizures, vomiting, disorientation, rapid heartbeat, diarrhea, and even death. Individuals with a pre-existing heart condition should be especially careful of using these products. Symptoms related to the consumption of these pure caffeine products are typically much worse than any symptoms related to drinking too much coffee or other beverage containing caffeine.

It’s almost impossible to accurately measure pure caffeine simply by using common kitchen tools, which can easily result in the consumption of a dangerous amount.

As a result of these dangers, the FDA is advising against the purchase and consumption of these products. They also want to know about any adverse effects linked with the consumption of these products, and request that these events be reported to the agency by calling 240-402-2405 or emailing CAERS@cfsan.fda.gov.
