Will CBS buy CNN?

If CNN, the Cable News Network, goes up for sale as part of a Time Warner - Fox merger, CBS may make the purchase.

If cable news network CNN goes up for sale, CBS will consider purchasing it, said CBS Corp Chief Executive Officer Leslie Moonves on Thursday, reports Reuters.

CNN, The Cable News Network, is owned by Time Warner, Inc., which is seeking federal approval of a merger with 21st Century Fox Inc., owned by media magnate Rupert Murdock.

While attending a meeting of the Television Critics Association, reporters asked Mr. Moonves whether he wanted to buy CNN if Fox decides to sell the channel. Fox may sell the channel to clear regulatory hurdles to accomplish the Time Warner – Fox merger.

“We’ve always talked about doing things with CNN,” responded Moonves. “We’ll see. It’s something I’m sure we will look at if that becomes available.”

Time Warner recently rejected an $80 billion offer from Fox to combine the two New York media giants. On Wednesday, Time Warner said the bid, valued at $85 a share, was not in “the best interests of shareholders and carried strategic, operational and regulatory risks,” reported the New York Post.

In a year full of big mergers, the Time Warner bid is one of the largest, reports The New York Times. Comcast and AT&T are also pursuing enormous takeovers to obtain more leverage in fee negotiations with companies such as 21st Century Fox, Time Warner, Viacom and CBS, according to the Times.

People who have been briefed on the Fox offer to Time Warner say Mr. Murdoch is determined, not likely to walk away anytime soon, and has a track record of pursuing companies that initially say no but later give in.

The ABC network owned by the Walt Disney Corporation, which does not own a cable news channel, is also a potential bidder for CNN.
