Despite criticism for lack of feminine exposure, Marvel insists that it's about the story, not bringing in female readers.
Marvel Comics took away the hammer from the male character, Thor, this week when they announced that it would be picked up by a woman.
The first drawings of the female superhero appeared on ABC’s The View. Series writer Jason Aaron insisted that the gender switch was equal to the original. “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before,” Aaron stated in a press release sent after the announcement.
The Marvel Universe is known to target a male audience, leaving women in the background. In the midst of several male super-hero movies, the company was recently criticized for not creating a Wonder Woman movie. It seems that Marvel is evening the playing field by making the gender switch with one of its biggest characters.
However, Marvel executive director Ryan Penagos stresses that this is not a method to lure female readers. It’s said that Thor could not pick up his hammer. A woman in his life happens to be worthy enough to do it, and becomes Thor. The God of Thunder has been a part of the comic boy’s club since Stan Lee and Jack Kirby adopted Viking mythology for their comic books in 1962. In that time, several others have been known to take the original Thor’s place.
The new Thor will now join the list of other lady Marvel leads, including Black Widow, Elektra, and She-Hulk. It’s been said that X-Men’s Storm will have her own comic soon. The series on the new Goddess of Thunder will launch in October.
