Jason Biggs deletes Malaysian Airlines tweet, apologizes

The actor, who at first defended his comment, has since called his statement "insensitive."

Actor Jason Biggs has apologized after being criticized for comments he made via Twitter on Thursday, reports the Los Angeles Times.

The American Pie actor tweeted, “Anyone want to buy my Malaysian Airlines frequent flier miles?” The tweet came roughly two hours after Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 was hit by a missile while flying over Ukraine.

The nearly 300 people who were on board are believed to be dead.

People responded on Twitter with criticism. Biggs, 36, stood by his comments at first. He retweeted messages of support for the joke and called those who disagreed with him “losers.”

He later had a change of heart.

Biggs deleted the tweet and issued a four-tweet apology.

“Hey all- ok, so- I am deleting my previous tweets,” wrote Biggs. “People were offended, and that was not my intent. Sorry to those of you that were.”

“This is obviously a horrible tragedy, and everyone-including myself- is sad and angry about it,” continued Biggs, in another tweet. “Sending positive thoughts to the victims and their families.”

“No one is making me send these tweets- I simply understand that my comments might have come off as insensitive and ill-timed. For that, I apologize,” noted the actor.

Others still voiced support for his joke, lamenting his decision to delete the tweet.

“I wish you didn’t delete. People are way too sensitive and laughter is medicine. Funny is funny!” wrote one user. “Fine then, since you deleted (it) I’m stealing it and tweeting it as my own (because) it was funny.”

Biggs currently stars in the Netflix series Orange is the New Black, which recently earned a number of Emmy nominations including Outstanding Comedy Series.
