Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie to co-star in Universal’s ‘By the Sea’

The famous couple will act alongside each other for the first time since 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith.'

For the first time since 2005’s hit spy film Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie will star alongside each other on the big screen. Universal Pictures announced on Friday that the superstar couple will co-star in By the Sea, an “intimate, character-driven drama.”

The screenplay was written by Jolie, who will also act as the film’s director and co-producer alongside Pitt. Since making her directorial debut with the 2011 independent Bosnian war drama In the Land of Blood and Honey, Jolie has been hard at work making as big of a name for herself behind the camera as she has in front of it. Universal’s Unbroken, the true story of Olympian and war hero Louis Zamperini adapted from Laura Hillenbrand’s best-seller, was directed and produced by the A-lister. Currently in post-production, Universal will release Unbroken on Christmas Day.

Jolie expressed her enthusiasm in taking on another project with Universal, saying in Friday’s statement,  “They have created a very special place for storytellers. I look forward to the continued passion and support they have provided to me as a filmmaker.”

Universal chairman Donna Langley also had nothing but praise for Jolie, stating, “Angelina continues to showcase her extraordinary storytelling abilities in front of and behind the camera and we are thrilled to extend our relationship with her on By the Sea. Angelina and Brad represent two of Hollywood’s brightest talents and we are excited to be a part of their collaboration on this powerful piece.”

After their steamy on-screen chemistry during the filming of Mr. and Mrs. Smith led to a off-screen relationship, Jolie and Pitt began raising six children together and recently announced they will “consider tying the knot when everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally able.” Pitt’s next film, David Ayer’s Fury, hits the big screen on Nov. 14.
