Recall for edible marijuana products in Denver

The recall was ordered after it was discovered that the water hash used in some products was being produced with machines not considered food-safe.

A recall has been ordered for marijuana infused edibles produced by a popular, Denver-based company after safety and contamination concerns were raised following an inspection performed by the Denver Department of Environmental Health.

Concerns center on the machines used to produce the water hash that has gone into products such as brownie mixes, Stixx candy, blondie mixes, and rice krispy treats. The company, At Home Baked, had been utilizing a modified washing machine to produce the hash. This is a common industry practice as it provides a good amount of centrifugal force, a key component to hash production. However, after an inspection, the Department of Environmental Health ruled that the machine was not considered food-safe and enforced a recall due to “possible contamination from unsanitary equipment” and “use of equipment not intended for food manufacturing.”

According to the co-owner of the shop, A.J. Ashkar, there are no food-safe machines available to produce the hash. Regardless of the set-back, At Home Baked is offering a full refund or replacement of any products being recalled. They are currently using a Bubble Magic machine in an attempt to satisfy the department’s regulations.

The Department of Environmental Health states that no one has reported any illness as the result of consumption of any product purchased from At Home Baked. The recall is merely a precautionary measure meant to ease concerns over potential contamination.

“We’re really frustrated with the entire situation,” Ashkar said. The recall includes every product ever made by the old machine, and Ashkar and his business partner have pledged to replace or refund every product lost to their customers. This will come at a large financial burden to At Home Baked.

“It’s an extremely difficult blow. It’ll be difficult to keep our head above water,” said Ashkar.
