African-American superhero to become Marvel’s new Captain America

Marvel announces Sam "The Falcon" Wilson will soon replace Steve Rogers as their Captain America.

Marvel ComicsĀ Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada made an appearance on Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report on Wednesday to reveal that an African-American superhero will soon replace Steve Rogers as Captain America. In an upcoming installment of the long-running Captain America comic book series, Sam Wilson – known to readers as “The Falcon” – will don the outfit and legendary shield of the patriotic Avenger.

Winged superhero The Falcon was introduced to the Marvel universe in 1969, making him one of the very first African-American superheroes. The character was portrayed by Anthony Mackie in this year’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but Quesada has not yet commented on whether or not we can expect to see Mackie as Captain America in any future films. Sebastian Stan will likely be the first to replace Chris Evans’ Captain America in the films, as his character Bucky Barnes was the first to do so in the comics.

Quesada announced that the passing of the Captain America shield will occur in November’s “All-New Captain America” No. 1. While he will no longer be called “Cap,” fans can still expect to see Steve Rogers in the series.

“Steve’s spirit is as willing as ever, but his body is no longer up to the task of being Captain America, so he’ll employ his skills as the new Cap’s remote strategic adviser,” stated Marvel Executive Editor Tom Brevoort “He’ll also tutor Sam in how to throw the shield, a skill that’s deceptively difficult for the new Cap to master.”

Sam Wilson will not be the first African-American to take up the shield for Rogers over Captain America’s 73-year-old history; that honor goes to Isaiah Bradley, who donned the star-spangled costume in the 2003 series “Truth: Red, White, and Black.”

The replacement of Steve Rogers joins a list of major Avengers-related changes Marvel has announced this week. The company revealed recently that Thor will soon be portrayed as a woman, and that Iron Man will be relocating to San Francisco in the comics.
