Changes in the Marvel Universe: Thor is now a woman

New Marvel comic was announced on the View on Tuesday.

Captain America has been put on notice. Marvel Comics is making a huge change to its canon, announcing that their Norse god Thor will be a female in an upcoming set of comics.

The news was announced on ABC’s talkshow The View on Tuesday morning. According to the Huffington Post, show moderator Whoopi Goldberg proclaimed that, “Thor, the God of Thunder, he messed up, and he’s no longer worthy to hold that damn hammer of his. For the first time in history, that hammer is being held by a woman!” Her announcement was echoed later on the 15th when Marvel released a statement further detailing the changes.

Although Thor has been male since his creation in 1962, the new comic will be the 8th one in the Marvel universe to feature a female lead. Editor Will Moss said, “The new Thor continues Marvel’s proud tradition of strong female characters…and this new Thor isn’t a temporary female substitute—she’s now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!” Series writer Jason Aaron was also quoted as saying, “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR.”

According to Wired, the female Thor is a continuation of a trend by Marvel to diversify its roster of superheroes. Moves such as having the Green Lantern Alan Scott come out as gay in 2012 and making Batgirl a Muslim teenager have marked the comic landscape over the last few years.

The new Thor comic series will debut in October.
