The shooter had reportedly once been married to the teen's aunt.
Cassidy Stay, 15, the lone survivor of a mass shooting in Texas, said Saturday that her family “is in a better place.”
“Hey guys, I’m really thankful for all the people that have been praying for me and keeping me and my family in their thoughts,” Stay told people gathered for a public memorial service at Lemm Elementary School in Spring, Texas, according to the Shreveport Times.
Stay’s family, including her parents and four siblings, were killed by accused gunman Ronald Lee Haskell on Wednesday. Cassidy would have been among the victims of this violent crime, but the bullet that was meant for her only grazed her head, CBS News reports.
Haskell had reportedly once been married to Cassidy’s aunt, Melanie Kaye Haskell. Searching for his ex-wife, Haskell entered the home of his former sister-in-law and tied up her family before executing them. After Haskell left her aunt’s home, Stay called police to tell them that the alleged shooter was on his way to her grandparents’ home. Haskell was eventually arrested after a several hours-long standoff.
“I really like Harry Potter,” Stay said at Lemm Elementary School. “In ‘The Prisoner of Azkaban,’ Dumbledore says, ‘Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times.’ I know that my mom, dad, Bryan, Emily, Becca and Zach are in a much better place and that I’ll be able to see them again one day. Thank you all for coming and for showing support for me and my family. Stay strong.”
