The 'Coolest Cooler' promises a high-tech update to the old standard.

Inventor Ryan Grepper, of Portland, Oregon, wants to bring a 21st  century makeover to the cooler. While the portable ice chest has been a necessary summer staple since it was first patented in 1951, it has remained relatively unchanged since the Coleman Company popularized a galvanized version in 1954. Small upgrades, including a switch to plastics have followed, but not improved the basic concept. Grepper has designed a new drink transport dubbed the “Coolest Cooler,” which does a lot more than just keep your beverages cold.

“The Coolest is a portable party disguised as a cooler, bringing blended drinks, music and fun to any outdoor occasion,” the Kickstarter page reads. “The Coolest cooler is 60 quarts of AWESOME packed with so much fun you’ll look for excuses to get outside more often.”

So what makes the Coolest Cooler “cool”? Keeping beverages chilled while on-the-go just the first step. Want to mix up a piña colada? Or need to charge your phone? The cooler allows you to plug right in. It features a built-in blender, removable waterproof Bluetooth speaker, and USB charger so you can be connected and  entertained at the next tailgate,  barbeque, or camping excursion. It also features an LED lid light, so you can easily see selections in the dark, a built-in cutting board that doubles as a cooler divider, extra wide tires for easy rolling, integrated storage for plates and a knife, a built-in bottle opener and tie-downs to transport additional supplies.

Launched just last week, the Coolest Cooler has raked in more than $4.5 million from over 23,000 backers. That is well over the original Kickstarter goal of just $50,000. And the online campaign still has 45 days to go. Grepper plans to use financing to fund  manufacturing agreements and finalize his prototype, with the goal of availability by February of 2015.
