Punk rock icon Tommy Ramone dies at 65

Ramone was the last remaining original member of the punk rock group, The Ramones.

The last surviving member of American punk band The Ramones, has passed away.

Tommy Ramone, 65, died in New York City on Friday following treatment for bile duct cancer. Ramone, born Erdelyi Tamas in Budapest, Hungary, immigrated to the United States in the 1950’s.

In 1974, he started The Ramones with three high school friends, co-producing their first three albums. Tommy initially started out as the group’s producer and manager. When drummer auditions were unsuccessful, he taught himself how to play and joined the band. Some of the group’s biggest songs included, “I Wanna be Sedated,” and “Blitzkrieg Bop”. Tommy stayed with The Ramones for about for years, before leaving to pursue solo projects. He was replaced by drummer Marky Ramone (Marc Bell).

The band did not break up until 1996. All other original members have since passed away. According to the Verge, Joey Ramone (Jeffrey Hyman) died in 2001 from lymphoma, Dee Dee (Douglas Colvin) died the following year due to a drug overdose, and Johnny (John Cummings) died of prostate cancer in 2004.

While none of the original members are alive, their musical impact will live on. Their sound helped create what is now known as punk rock. They inspired music overseas, leading to the creation of groups like the Clash and the Sex Pistol in London. Their sound is still cited as inspirations to new generations of musicians

“There are hundreds, there are thousands, there are millions of melodies happening in Ramones songs,” the biographer, Everett True, told the BBC.

Although they were not the most commercially successful, their hit songs earned them an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.
