Iranian court sentences eight Facebook activists to prison

An Iranian court has sentenced eight Facebook activists to 21 years in prison each, saying that the activists were plotting against national security, spreading propaganda and insulting officials.

An Iranian court sentenced eight Facebook page administrators to prison on Sunday. The report from the IRNA says that the activists are being convicted of plotting against national security, spreading propaganda and insulting officials.

While neither the defendants nor the Facebook pages in question were named, the activists reportedly come from eight cities around the capital of Tehran. Each defendant was sentenced to 21 years in jail, giving a grand total of 127 years in prison.

Facebook, among other web services such as YouTube and Twitter, is already banned in the country. Despite this, some Iranian senior leaders are active on Twitter, and a number of Iranian citizens use proxy servers and VPNs, which essentially hide the location of the user, to make their way around the ban. Mobile apps of each social media platform are also banned.

Social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter have been banned in Iran since Iranian opposition members allegedly used them to organize protest rallies after the former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was controversially re-elected.

The verdict was made against the eight young Facebook activists following several court appearances in April.

This news comes after an Iranian judge ordered Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to appear in court following complaints that applications like Whatsapp and Instagram, which are both owned by Facebook, infringe on the users privacy.

Iran officially made accessing social media platforms a crime about a month ago. Social media platforms have had a rocky road in the country, and the ban surrounding the Presidential election in Iran took place in 2009.
