Dinosaurs and Netflix cancellation hoaxes shake the internet

When a well-timed hoax hits the internet, it causes quite a stir.

Every once in a while, a good internet hoax pops up and scares everyone. With the right timing and information, these can have disastrous consequences.

Proof of this comes from a hoax that appeared this weekend, created by satirical site Empire News. According to their fake story, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings cancelled Orange is The New Black because creator Jenji Kohan refused to add more male leads.

It seemed fairly believable until readers saw the CEO’s fake quote, saying, “A woman in jail? How does anyone even watch this show in the first place? It’s like we took everything bad about ‘OZ,’ and make this show with the leftovers.”

The article further claimed that the first two seasons would be removed from the streaming service, in addition to the third season’s cancellation. However, the show’s creator and Netflix took to Twitter, letting fans know the rumors were false. The show could not be doing better: it has been nominated for 12 Emmys, and is filming its third season.

Most successful hoaxes— even those with no realistic foundation— work if they follow an actual big story. On Facebook, a man by the name of Jay Branscomb posted a photo of Steven Spielberg on the set of Jurassic Park, sitting next to an animatronic dinosaur. The photo was a vague reference to Kendall Jones, a cheerleader who caught Facebook’s attention by posting photos of herself next to rare animals in South Africa. Her poses were very similar to the famous director. Despite Spielberg being a few centuries too late for such a kill, there were lots of angry people.

These hoaxes will join the list of many that have fooled the internet.
